What This Verse Means
Paul makes a powerful contrast here between two ways of serving God. The old way was bound by written rules and regulations—the law that held people captive. But through Christ's death and resurrection, believers are set free from this legalistic framework. We're not released from God's standards but from the law's condemning power. This freedom isn't license to do whatever we want, but an invitation to serve God in a new, Spirit-led way that flows from within rather than from external pressure.
