Editorial Notes
Mercy and grace are related but distinct. Grace gives what is not deserved; mercy withholds what is deserved. Both are expressions of God's character, and both are essential to understanding how God relates to human failure.
Lamentations 3:22-23 is the most famous mercy verse in scripture: "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Written in the aftermath of Jerusalem's destruction — one of the darkest moments in Israel's history — this is not triumphant praise. It's a small, deliberate act of trust. The mercies are new every morning: not accumulated from yesterday, not borrowed from tomorrow, but fresh today.
Psalm 103:8 — "The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love" — is a description of God's character, not just his actions. Mercy is not something God does occasionally; it's who he is. "Slow to anger" is worth noting: the anger is real, but it's not the first response. Mercy comes first.
Micah 7:18 asks a rhetorical question that answers itself: "Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love." God delights in mercy. It's not reluctant or minimal — it's something he takes pleasure in.
Matthew 5:7 — "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy" — connects receiving and giving in the same way that forgiveness does. The person who has genuinely received mercy becomes capable of extending it. The beatitude is both a promise and a description of how mercy works in human life.
