Editorial Notes

How to Read These Verses

Children in scripture are not peripheral — they're central. Jesus placed a child in the middle of a dispute about greatness and said "unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." That's a striking claim. The qualities of childhood — dependence, trust, openness, lack of pretense — are held up as models, not things to be outgrown.

Psalm 139:13-16 is the most foundational verse in this collection for children: "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb." The language of knitting is intimate and intentional. Every child is described as a deliberate work of God, known before birth, seen in the making. That's a profound identity statement for a child to carry.

Matthew 19:14 — "Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven" — is Jesus overruling his disciples, who were trying to keep children away. The kingdom belongs to such as these. Children are not waiting to become important; they already are.

Proverbs 22:6 — "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it" — is addressed to parents and caregivers, not children. It's a reminder that early formation matters, that the habits and orientations established in childhood tend to persist. The investment of early years is not wasted.

Deuteronomy 6:5-7 describes the method of passing faith to children: not formal instruction alone, but conversation woven into daily life — "when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." Faith is transmitted through ordinary moments, not just special ones.
